All students in Grades 9 and 10 are required to take comprehensive health education at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. The overall goal of the health curriculum is to continue efforts begun in earlier grades to promote the health and well-being of our students, and to help them make wise and informed decisions during their teenage years.
Sexuality education is part of the comprehensive curriculum and includes topics such as Reproductive Anatomy, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Contraceptives, Pregnancy, and Sexual Assault Prevention. Some material will contain adult content, given the subject matter. Sexuality education is an important and essential component of our curriculum and was developed in accordance with the Massachusetts Department of Education Health Curriculum Frameworks.
Under Massachusetts law and School Committee policy, you may exempt your child from human sexual education. To receive an exemption, please contact your child's guidance counselor. No student who is exempted from this portion of the curriculum will be penalized. We may provide an alternative assignment to students who are exempt.
We look forward to working with you to ensure that your child has a positive and educationally enriching experience this school year. If you have any questions about sex education or any other matter concerning your child’s education, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Joseph Francis, M.Ed. / CMAA Athletic Director/Wellness Coordinator francisj@sbregional.org
